Sowmya's Stitched Dreams: An Inspirational Mother's Journey to a Successful Apparel Business

Undoubtedly, we can all concur that the role of a mother is one of the most demanding, especially when raising young children. However, the remarkable woman you're about to hear has not only embraced the challenges of motherhood but has also succeeded in building a thriving business, with a staggering turnover of Rs 30 lakhs each month.

She's a fantastic mom, a great daughter-in-law, and a super successful businessperson all at the same time. This is the inspirational story of Chitti Collections founder Sowmya.

After being a homemaker for four years, in 2019, she started Chitti Collections. It all started when Sowmya noticed that women's clothes were expensive, lacked quality, and didn't offer much variety. So she decided to do something about it and built a brand that focuses on offering high-quality clothing with plenty of choices for women. 

But it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. Sowmya invested her own resources in building the business without relying on loans or external support, which caused financial challenges to fuel the business. But just as the business began to gain momentum, there was a COVID outbreak, followed by subsequent lockdowns that restricted business hours. 

Later that year, the business world witnessed a surge in e-commerce resulting in marketing battles from the massive shopping malls to catch consumer attention. Adding to that, their physical store is situated in a remote area far away from the main road within a residential setting, which compounded the effect. 

That’s when Sowmya made some bold and innovative decisions to bring the business to its current stature. One such incident was during the lockdown. Before the pandemic, they primarily concentrated on selling Kurtis and professional wear but during the lockdown, they quickly changed their approach by shifting their focus to home wear. This move shows their adaptability in the market. 

To compete with the intense e-commerce competition, they launched an online store on Swipe, and they also employed WhatsApp groups for product promotion to provide their customers with door delivery. In the battle against the marketing efforts of shopping malls and to carve a market share of their own, Chitti Collections started their store promotion through Instagram and YouTube to attract fresh potential customers.

Their efforts paid off today as Chitti Collections boasts a global customer base, shipping to destinations as far as Australia, America, and beyond. With a loyal WhatsApp customer base of 9,000, they consistently break their own sales records month after month. They also adjusted their working hours to a more family-friendly schedule, from 12 to 7, to provide their employees with work-life balance.
