Understanding the Essential FASTag Rules

Indian highways are developing rapidly, and toll collection has also become digital. After the introduction of FASTag, long queues, cash hassles, and unnecessary stoppages at toll plazas have reduced considerably. From 2021, FASTag is compulsory for all four-wheelers, but there are many drivers who do not have clarity about the rules, penalties, and usage. Due to this, they are mistakenly charged extra fees.

What Is FASTag?

FASTag is a digital toll payment system that works on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This is a small sticker that is pasted on the vehicle's windshield. When the vehicle passes through the toll plaza, the scanner reads the tag, and the toll amount is automatically deducted from the FASTag wallet or linked bank account.

Every FASTag provider (bank / wallet) has a minimum balance requirement. If the balance below this limits:

Only one FASTag can active on one vehicle registration number

How To Avoid FASTag Errors At Toll Plazas

There are five points that you should learn:

1 Fix the FASTag in correct place:

The top of the windshield or the little right side is the best option for fixing FASTag. The scanner reads easily from this side.

2 Do not fold, scratch or laminate the tag:

FASTag is an RFID-based sticker. Due to lamination or creases, the chip signal becomes weak.

3 Maintain Minimum Balance For Safety:

NHAI has removed the minimum balance requirement. Users can maintain Rs 200 - Rs 300 for safety. Tag may be temporarily inactive on low balance as per issuer policy only.

4 Update correct vehicle class:

If the vehicle is a car but another class is selected in the tag, then either the toll will be higher or the tag will be rejected.

5 Replace the tag if it's damaged:

There are chances of damaging a chip due to heat, sunlight or rough cleaning. In that situation, a new tag is the best option.

3 What causes toll fees to be applied when FASTag is not active ?

Double toll is an NHAI penalty. If FASTag is inactive, blacklisted, has a zero balance, or unreadable, then the toll plaza directs you to the cash and charges double the amount. The purpose of this rule is to prevent misuse and encourage everyone to use FASTag.

Checking your FASTag balance is easy. You can check instantly from your bank app, MyFASTag app, or PhonePe, or via SMS. Whenever the toll deductions occur , you will receive a message regarding the deductions immediately.
