National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme

After receiving CCEA approval, the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme for the Central Sector was established in 2008 with the goal of providing scholarships to deserving students from economically disadvantaged areas in order to prevent their dropout at the eighth grade level and encourage them to continue their education at the secondary level. In accordance with the program, one lakh new scholarships are given to deserving students in class IX each year, as well as continuation or renewal for classes X to XII. These students are expected to attend state government, government-aided, and local body schools. From April 1, 2017, the scholarship will be worth Rs. 12000/- per year (it was previously worth Rs. 6000/- per year).

The Scheme will continue from FY 2021–2022 to FY 2025–2026 with funding totaling Rs.1827 crores, as approved by the Cabinet.

Qualification standards:

Students who qualify for the scholarship have parents whose combined annual income does not exceed Rs. 3,50,000. For the purpose of the scholarship selection process, students must have earned at least a 55 percent grade or equivalent in Class VII (SC/ST students may receive a 5 percent reduction). The students should be enrolled as regular students in a public, publically supported, or local body school. The scholarship is not available to students attending NVS, KVS, or residential schools. According to state government regulations, there is reservation.

Selection of new Awardee Students:

For the purpose of selecting students to receive the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship, each State/UT administers its own test. At stage VIII of the class, the exam is given. Students who meet the eligibility requirements must pass both exams, i.E. E. With a minimum combined score of 40% on the SAT and MAT portions of the NMMSS exam. This cutoff is 32 percent marks for students who are SC/ST.

Students chosen for renewal awards include:.

For the scholarship to continue (with a 5 percent relaxation for SC/ST candidates) in the subsequent higher classes, the awardees must receive a minimum of 60 percent in Class X. The scholarship recipients must successfully advance from class IX to class X and from class XI to class XII on their first try in order to continue receiving financial aid in grades X and XII.

Scholarship payments are made:

From 2018–19, the program is fully integrated into the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The Ministry approves the release of funds from the Annual Budget Provision to SBI, the implementing bank for the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) through Public Financial Management System (PFMS) scheme for scholarship disbursement to students directly into their bank accounts
