Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique code that UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) provides to every applicant. The 12-digit code is randomly generated. All residents of India, regardless of age, gender and location, can voluntarily apply and register for an Aadhaar card.
A person who wants to register for an Aadhaar card has to provide certain demographic data and biometric data during the registration. Aadhaar application is completely free for all applicants.
An individual can apply for an Aadhaar card only once. The system is designed in such a way that only one Aadhaar number can suit one person.
The special feature of Aadhaar is that it is unique. No two people get the same 12-digit Aadhaar code. The uniqueness of Aadhaar is achieved through the deletion of biometric and demographic data.
The deduplication process compares the applicant's data - demographic and biometric - with the information stored in the UIDAI database. It checks whether the resident is already registered in the mass database or not.
All people should register for Aadhaar only once. If a person tries to enroll again, the duplication process ensures that a second Aadhaar is not issued to the person. All subsequent registrations after the first registration will be rejected.
This is another unique feature of Aadhaar. It can be authenticated and verified anywhere in India. This allows for easy online verification. This is a very important feature as millions of Indians move from state to state for work, higher education, travel etc.
The random number does not appear in the Aadhaar number apart from the basic demographic and biometric information of the cardholder. It does not track other details like religion, caste, health status, income level, geography etc.
UID (Unique Identity) generated by Aadhaar is built on a scalable and open architecture. Resident information is stored centrally in the system and can be identified in any country in minutes. Aadhaar verification service can process more than 100 million verifications per day.
Aadhaar does not use any proprietary system. It is built on an open source architecture that is not tied to specific computer hardware, specific database vendor, specific operating system, specific storage, or other vendor specific technologies. The entire system is built using open source technologies that can handle scalability reliably and vendor neutral.
All applicants must visit the Aadhaar Enrollment Center to start the process. This includes filling out an application form, providing demographic and biometric data, proof of identity and address. Once you have submitted all the information, you will receive a receipt containing your EID. The Aadhaar card created for you will be sent by post to your residential address.
It is free - You do not have to pay any fee to enroll or get your Aadhaar card issued.
Individuals can visit any authorized Aadhaar Enrollment Center in India to start the application process. You do not need to visit the registration center in your area. You can use any center that suits you.
You must bring your ID and proof of address. UIDAI accepts a large number of PoI and PoA documents. Some commonly accepted documents include passport, driver's license, ration card, voter card with photo, etc. You can submit photo ID cards such as government-issued ID cards and PAN cards to prove your identity.
Landline, electricity or water bills from the last three months can be sent as proof of address.
In the absence of general proof, photo identity proof issued by Tehsildar/Gazetted Officer is also allowed.
If a family member does not have individual documents issued by PoI/PoA, he/she can still apply for an Aadhaar card. In this case, the head of the family should first enroll in Aadhaar with valid PoI and PoA documents.
After the head of the family has received his Aadhaar card, other family members can also be registered using the family's Aadhaar number and partnership document.
If there are no documents, the resident can also take help from the representatives of the registration center for Aadhaar registration.
Three ways to enroll for Aadhaar:
1. Using valid IDs and address proofs
2. Family based enrollment
3. Recommender based
At the Enrollment Center, you will need to complete an application form that you will receive from the Enrollment Officer. After submitting the form, an officer will take your photo, iris scan and fingerprints as part of the registration process.
After the registration officer has entered your details into the system, review the information - in English and in the local language. If you notice any errors, correct them yourself during the registration process.
After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation form and an Enrollment Number (EID). You can correct your registration information within 96 hours of registration by visiting the Enrollment Center.
