Applying for an Indian passport used to be a complicated process and was mostly done with the help of agents. However, things have changed in recent years with good processes and technology. You no longer need an agent and can do everything yourself. We cover the entire process end to end and also have user experience.
“Many use renewal and reissue interchangeably. But there is a slight difference. The term renewal is used if you have a Short Validity Passport (SVP) and are requesting an extension. In this case, you will still receive a new book. Unlike reissuance, this involves using up the pages or passport after the 10-year validity has expired. The terms renewal and reissue are used interchangeably in the article below for ease of understanding. The process is the same, so no need to worry.
You can renew or reissue your Indian passport up to 1 year before your passport expires. If you are a student, you can reissue your passport within two years of its expiry by selecting the reason "Expired within 3 years/Expiring". You can renew or receive your passport again if you complete one of the following:
1. Your personal details such as name, marital status, etc. has changed
2. The passport has already expired within the last 3 years or before
3. The pages of your passport are completely full and there are no pages left
4. The passport is damaged or you have lost it.
Passport India has a document advisor that clearly tells you the required documents. Before starting the process, you should enter your details to receive a list of required documents so that you do not panic after registration. You can access it at Passport India Document Advisor.
Below is a step-by-step guide to reissue or renew your Indian passport.
As paper forms are done away with, you have to fill an Indian passport application online. Below are the details.
The first step is to register the passport on the website.
1. You just need to go to the Passport Seva website and click on the 'New User Registration' button.
You will be asked to enter basic information and an email address. It is used to log in and complete the passport application. You can choose the passport office according to your current place of residence.
2. Another thing is to activate your account using the email address you received and log in.
When you log in, you will see the option "Request a fresh passport / new passport". Click on it and enter the details.
Note: Passport can be applied anywhere:
From June 2018, you can apply for a passport anywhere in India as per the new guidelines. You don't have to do it in the same state you live in. The account creation page has a drop down menu where you can freely choose your location.
After you have activated your account and logged in, you will be presented with two options when you complete the application form, the online system will show option 1 and option 2 . It doesn't matter which one you use, they both work the same.
Option 1: Using the online form to complete the application online. You need the internet.
Option 2 : Using the PDF form. You download the form, fill it and then upload it.
It is preferred to use option 2 PDF form as some of the information may not be easily available to us and we need to store information etc. I also like the PDF format option because it is very detailed and clear. Either way, it's the same.
You will need the information below to complete the form.
1. Your current address and other information already in your previous passport.
2. You must provide emergency contact information such as name, phone number and email address.
3. If you change the information, for example, add the information of the spouse, then their information according to the document.
4. If you use the PDF form option, you must fill in all the required fields and then press Confirm and Save. It will ask you to save the file and# 0;XML files# 1; and give it a name.
5. You must upload the file to the section where you just downloaded the PDF form. All information is automatically generated, you must confirm it before saving, because after this step you cannot change the information. Of course, you can exchange them at the passport office if something is wrong.
Step 3: Pay and reserve your seat or entry, print your application receipt:
Once your application has been created, the next step is to check available seats and pay. You can also check seats or go to Check appointments on the main page of the website. In any case, after submitting the application. you have to choose it, see it below.
You have a "Show saved/sent apps" option on the left. Select an application by clicking the radio button. Then you show the options and their links. You must click Pay and make an appointment.
It gives the option to pay either online or through challan. This is usually easy to do online. Selected online payment
Then there is an option to select Passport Service Kendra and time period. This shows the available time range options.
You can select the same and then you will go to the payment page. Where you can choose a payment method. I used NetBanking and it was smooth
If you are allowed to enter, you can cancel the appointment and then carry the cancellation slip and payment receipt, which will allow you to enter directly at the appropriate times.
If the payment is made, the registration receipt must be printed and brought with you on the day of admission. It also has a barcode, make sure it is clearly printed and the payment confirmation information. If you notice something wrong in the information, write it down and you can report it to the passport service at the station.
You have a nice step-by-step guide to help you identify the list of documents required for passport renewal. When you go to the home page and click on Document advice for renewal / reissue, a form will appear to select options. Based on the options, you will be shown a list of required documents. These are the documents you need. NO additional documents are required. In fact I also called customer support and they said the same list and my experience at Passport Seva Kendra says the same. You do not need any additional documents. DO NOT listen to others.
Below are the typical documents you need to take to the passport office depending on your situation.
1. You must print the online form with the Application Reference Number (ARN) and keep it with you. This document must be with you.
2. Original old passport that has expired or expired
You need nothing but a photocopy of the first page, the last page and the ECNR information page. You certify yourself (your signature)
You may have valid proof of address such as utility bills, bank statements or voter cards etc... see some of these documents below.
