NIC: Mandatory 2-Factor Authentication for Taxpayers with AATO above 100cr

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has announced the implementation of 2-Factor Authentication for the E-Way Bill and E-Invoice System in an ongoing effort to improve security and protect taxpayer information. Beginning on July 15, 2023, this mandatory requirement aims to add an extra layer of security to the login process.
Ensuring the safety and integrity of sensitive taxpayer data is of paramount importance. The introduction of 2-Factor Authentication for the E-Way Bill and E-Invoice System is a proactive step towards safeguarding this information. This authentication method requires two forms of verification: a username and password, as well as a One-Time Password (OTP).

Various Methods of Generating OTPs

To provide flexibility and convenience to taxpayers, the NIC has implemented three different modes of generating OTPs. These methods include:

1. SMS OTP: Upon login, an OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number of the taxpayer via SMS.
2. Sandes App OTP:
The Sandes app, developed by the government for secure messaging, allows users to receive OTPs directly on their registered mobile numbers. Taxpayers can download and install the Sandes app to receive and authenticate OTPs conveniently.
3. NIC-GST-Shield App OTP:
The NIC-GST-Shield app, provided by the E-Way Bill and E-Invoice System, allows users to generate OTPs without internet connectivity. The app can be downloaded from the E-Way Bill or E-Invoice portal and must be registered on the taxpayer's mobile number. The OTP is displayed on the app, and it refreshes every 30 seconds, ensuring enhanced security.

Registration Process for 2-Factor Authentication

To enable 2-Factor Authentication for the E-Way Bill and E-Invoice System, taxpayers need to follow a simple registration process. Here are the steps:

1. Log in to the E-Way Bill System using your credentials.
2. Navigate to the Main Menu and select "2-Factor Authentication."
3. Confirm your registration for 2-Factor Authentication.
4. Once registered, the system will prompt you to enter the OTP along with your username and password during login.

Conclusion:

Implementing 2-Factor Authentication for the E-Way Bill and E-Invoice System is a significant stride towards enhancing the security and privacy of taxpayer information. By requiring an additional level of authentication through OTPs, the National Informatics Centre aims to strengthen cybersecurity measures. Taxpayers should promptly register for 2-Factor Authentication and familiarize themselves with the various methods of generating OTPs. This initiative is a testament to the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and reliable taxation ecosystem for all stakeholders involved.
