Odisha Gambling Prevention Act of 1955, prohibits online fantasy gaming in Odisha. Andhra Pradesh introduced a new section in the Andhra Pradesh Gaming Act, 1974, to prohibit fantasy gaming apps. Telangana had also amended its Gaming Act in 2017 by inserting money-betting games-related provisions. Assam had prohibited fantasy websites' access by individuals as well.

However, such prohibitions have been challenged in courts time and again. Even the Madras High Court had already declared Tamil Nadu's wholesale prohibition on online gaming as unconstitutional, providing more meat to the skill-vs-chance debate for fantasy sports.

Fantasy Sports as an Emerging Industry

In spite of such legal ambiguity, fantasy sports have thrived. The Indian fantasy sports market is a few thousand crores and is growing at a very rapid rate. Millions of users log on to these websites for every major sporting event, particularly for Indian Premier League (IPL) and international cricket matches.

With so much mass involvement, fantasy sports have also begun creating employment opportunities, enhancing digital literacy, and encouraging good online behavior.
