Definition

What is IFSC Code

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is a unique 11-character code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to identify every bank branch participating in the NEFT system in India.

The IFSC code is made up of three parts:

  • The first four characters (CITI in CITI0000004) are the bank code, identifying CITI Bank.
  • The fifth character (0 in CITI0000004) is reserved and is typically zero, separating the bank code from the branch code.
  • The last six characters (000004 in CITI0000004) are the branch code for BANGALORE.

For example, CITI0000004 is the IFSC for CITI Bank’s BANGALORE branch. IFSC codes are used in NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and other electronic transfers.
