National Technical Textiles Mission

The technical textiles industry is one of the booming sectors in the 21st century, which is taking its ground in India. With high chances of adaptability, technical textiles are used in various areas of day-to-day life, which led to the technical textiles' mission.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) initiated the National Textile Mission to make India become the leader in technical textiles globally.

What is the National Textile Mission? This blog post will guide you through everything you need to know about the national technical textile mission.

What is the National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM)?

Before understanding the implication of the National Textile Mission, one needs to apprehend what technical textiles are and how they help.

What is a technical textile?

Technical textiles are textile materials primarily focusing on manufacturing products for technical interpretation and applicable properties rather than concentrating on aesthetic looks and characteristics.

These textiles are a futuristic textile segment with applications ranging from agriculture, road, fireproofing jackets, bulletproofing jackets, space applications, and others.

Depending on the use of the technical textiles, they can be broadly classified into 12 broad categories.

1. Agro-tech

2. Cloth-tech

3. Build-tech

4. Home-tech

5. Geo-tech

6. Mobile-tech

7. Sports-tech

8. Pro-tech

9. Medi-tech

10. Pack-tech

11. Indu-tech

12. Oeko-tech

National Textile Mission

Here are a few crucial fundamental things to consider about the national technical textiles mission.

1. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, headed by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, laid the foundation for the technical textiles mission.

2. This mission has been set up with a four-year implementation goal from 2020 to 2024 and was estimated to cost 1428 crores INR.

3. National Textile Mission will be successfully performed under The Ministry of Textiles with Mr. Nihar Ranjan Dash as a mission coordinator.

4. The technical textiles mission was initiated in line with Make in India by the Government of India.

National Textile Mission Objectives:

To hold the top position in technical textiles, the aims and objectives of the mission are:

1. The primary goal of the national textile mission is to position India at a top position in technical textiles at a global level.

2. The penetration level of these textiles in India is 3-5%, which is at a record low compared to the advanced countries with 30-70%. So, India plans to bridge this gap.

3. This mission aims to focus on technical textiles product usage in various crucial aspects of the country as the mission goes on getting the market for Indian textiles.

4. To deeply understand the national textiles' mission, it is widely divided into four components.

Four Components of National Textiles Mission:

The mission has been divided into four components to execute the task successfully, with each element focusing on a set of different things in the mission.

Component 1:

The first component of the national textile mission focuses on research, innovation, and development categories.

The estimated amount to attain the goal is 1000 crores INR. Under component 1, two aspects will be accomplished. Primarily the research is done at the fiber level, followed by the research on the textile classifications. The fundamental research shall be done at IITs, and CSIR laboratories, including every other reputed scientific or academic laboratory, while the application-based investigation is said to be done at CSIR, IIT, DRDO,  NAR, and others.

Component 2:

Component 2 focuses on promotion and market development.

Under the promotion category, market promotion, market development, international technical collaboration, and others shall be utilized to promote and develop the mission while focusing on a 15-20% missions growth rate per annum to take the domestic market to 20-50 billion USD by the end of 2024.

Component 3:

Component 3 remains its focus on export promotion.

Under component 3, the current value of the export promotion will be increased from 14000 crores to 20000 crores in 2020 and 2021. And it is expected to grow by another 10% per year in 2023 and 2024.

Component 4:

The final component of the mission is education, training, and skill development.

Under component 4, authorities aim to implement the technical textile industry skills at an engineering level among the students to adapt to the fast-changing technical textile industry.

So, followed by these four components, India aims to position itself among the top textile nations by accomplishing the national textile mission.

Benefits of the National Textile Mission

While there are several benefits to accomplishing the mission, below are a few.

1. The falling agricultural occupation shall be increased.

2. The use of these technologies can be implemented in almost every other industry, which can increase profits with fewer expenditures.

3. It opens hundreds and thousands of job posts by encouraging manufacturing and export activities.
