Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR)

The Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) initiative aims to disseminate research tales from India for the general public in a style that is simple to follow and engaging for a general reader. The AWSAR program seeks to close the communication gap between research and the general public by utilizing the abilities of PhD students and Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs).

The AWSAR program is conceptualized and supported by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) Division of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). For the scientific community, the NCSTC division is actively involved in creating a variety of outreach activities.

PhD and postdoctoral scholars in the fields of technology and science are urged to produce at least one popular science story and take part in this national competition as part of the AWSAR program.

Article Submission Guidelines for the AWSAR Initiative

The following instructions must be followed by applicants when submitting articles for the AWSAR program:

1. The PhD scholars must have spent the previous two years enrolled in a PhD program at a university that has received government approval.

2. Articles can be sent using the PDFs connected to any recognized institute.

3. The article should present a thorough research narrative in plain language that is accessible to the general public. Except for self-explanatory infographics, it should not contain complicated diagrams, equations, graphs, or formulae for successful communication.

4. Only unique submissions made specifically for the AWSAR award will be considered. Articles that have already been published or that are being sent to another publication at the same time are not accepted.

5. In the essay they submit, applicants should include their name, affiliation, contact information, theme, and article title.

6. The candidates should include a statement stating that the article is unique and hasn't been published anywhere else.

7. A 1000–1500 word article is acceptable.

8. The applicants who are found to have plagiarized and submitted multiple stories will be blacklisted and prohibited from participating in future competitions.

9. The articles must be submitted electronically by the candidates via the AWSAR site.

Article Selection Criteria for the AWSAR Awards

The DST will analyze the submitted science tales with the help of an expert panel made up of media professionals, science communicators, subject matter experts, and practitioners. The following standards were used to evaluate submissions and choose the best PDFs and papers from PhD scholars:

1. The entries will be assessed for fairness, accuracy, clarity, perceptiveness, and ingenuity.

2. The entries should address issues like: Why is research important?

3. Is it interesting to read?

4. Does the article provide clear explanations of the research?

Workshops Held As Part of the AWSAR Initiative

The AWSAR program's workshops are designed to give participants advice on how to write well and communicate clearly while using a popular science writing format. The professionals that have been recognized will host a few sessions each year. The following topics are included in the seminars' potential theme:

1. Find out what makes good writing.

2. Put an emphasis on writing simply and effectively, and utilize vocabulary that conveys its meaning.

3. Using language, phrases, and sentences that are suitable.

4. Ideas for creative writing.

5. Guidelines for crafting a hook that will draw the reader in.

6. Basic conventions for sentence structure, punctuation, and style.
