UPI Complaint: How to Raise and Resolve Issues

UPI is a platform where you can send and receive money very quickly, and there are many UPI platforms like Google Pay, Paytm, PhonePe, and BHIM, etc., but sometimes things go wrong, such as payment getting stuck in between, unauthorised payment. When this happens, you need to raise a UPI complaint so the issue can be fixed. In this guide, you’ll learn in simple steps how to raise a UPI complaint and how your issue is solved afterwards, with useful ways to avoid UPI issues.

What is the UPI complaint?

A UPI complaint is a report you file regarding an issue in the UPI payment that did not go through as it should. This is due to many reasons, like money getting deducted but not reaching the other person, sending money to the wrong UPI ID or a payment getting stuck or other problems like unauthorised transactions, difficulty in updating their linked bank account or issues with setting or entering their UPI PIN.

Reason for the UPI Complaint

The following are the common reasons for the UPI Complaint,

Entering Wrong details: If you type the wrong UPI ID, phone number, the payment will be paid to the wrong person

Money Deducted but Not Received: At times, the amount gets deducted from your account, but doesn’t reach the receiver

App or bank glitches: Sometimes the UPI app, your bank, or the system has technical issues. This can cause failed or delayed payments.

Payment stuck in between: Some transactions remain in pending status for a long time and don’t show success or failure.

Fraud payment: If money leaves your account without you doing the transaction, it means someone else may have accessed it without you knowing

How to raise a UPI complaint?

UPI complaints are raised through UPI apps(Paytm, Google Pay, BHIM UPI) and directly through the NPCI website, so below are listed step by step process on how to raise a complaint from these sources.

Paytm

Method 1: Using the profile section

Step 1: Open the Paytm app

Step 2: Select the Profile menu from the top left section

Step 3: Select Help and Support from the menu

Step 4: Select the transaction you need to raise a complaint for

Step 5: Type your issue in the comments, like why the amount gets deducted from my account but does not reach the receiver

Step 6: Paytm will show the details and help you in solving them

Method 2: Using balance & History

Step 1: Open the Paytm app

Step 2: On the home screen, select Balance & History.

Step 3:Tap the transaction you're having an issue with, and then choose the Help icon.

Step 4: Type your issue in the comment with that transaction

Step 5: Paytm will show the details and help you in solving them

Google Pay

Step 1: Open the Google Pay app

Step 2: Go to “See transaction history” on the home page

Step 3: Choose the payment you want to raise a dispute for.

Step 4: Click “Having issues?” to continue.

Step 5: Under “What’s wrong?”, pick the problem you’re facing.

Step 6: Submit your complaint, and Google Pay will show the details and help you solve them

BHIM UPI

Method 1: Through the get in touch page

Step 1: Open the BHIM UPI app or website and go to the “Get in Touch” page.

Step 2: Please select your reason: complaint, feedback, or query.

Step 3: Select the type of complaint you wish to file.

Step 4: Fill in details: the type of issue, transaction date, your VPA, mobile number, and email ID.

Step 5:Describe your problem in the comment box and submit it.

Method 2: Through the BHIM mobile app

Step 1: Open the BHIM UPI mobile app

Step 2: Select “Raise a Complaint” to open your transaction history.

Step 3: Select the type of transaction you are complaining about.

Step 4: Select "Raise Concern," fill out the form describing your problem, and then submit it.

NPCI website

Step 1: Visit the official NPCI website

Step 2: Move your cursor to “Get help” and click on “UPI Complaint in the customer menu

Step 3: A form will appear, and start filling in all details

Step 4: Choose the type of complaint, i.e Transaction or Non-Transaction

Step 5: Pick issue type ( like transaction pending)

Step 6: Fill in details: Transaction ID, Transaction date, transaction amount and Email ID

Step 7: The applicant submits the form the (CRN) will be generated to track the status.

How are UPI complaints resolved?

Role of NPCI in solving the problem

NPCI works with apps and banks to keep the process smooth and quick so that users feel safe using the UPI. It has a process system to solve issues related to the UPI. If the banks cannot fix the issue related to the UPI, it is the final escalation of all the issues directly to NPCI, which solves the problem related to any UPI complaint

Procedure for solving a UPI complaint

Here is the process of how a UPI complaint is solved. In this procedure, NPCI, the bank and third-party apps play a crucial role

Complaint is raised: You first report the complaint through the UPI apps, the bank’s UPI section or directly to the NPCI official website

App checks the issue first: The complaint first goes to UPI apps like Google Pay, Paytm, they review the issue, do an investigation and try to fix it within a few days and communicate the same with the user

Complaint moves to bank: If the app cannot solve the issue, it automatically goes to the bank linked to the app. This bank checks its logs and tries to find out what went wrong in the transaction

Other banks get involved: NPCI also involves the sender’s bank and the receiver’s bank to verify some details, and that helps to confirm what is issue’s root place

NPCI steps in at last: If the case is still not solved or it’s complicated—like fraud, double debit, wrong beneficiary, or merchant issues, NPCI investigates directly and tells the bank what action to take.

Final update to user: Once the issue is resolved, you get a complaint status as resolved, refunded or closed, you will also get updates via email

Easy ways to avoid UPI issues

It is better to avoid UPI issues in the first place. We need to be careful ourselves before there is any issue with the UPI transaction, and we need to report it. Below are some ways to avoid UPI disputes

Never share details like: UPI PIN, OTP, or any password with anyone

Do not download UPI apps from unofficial app stores to prevent installing fake apps

Always double-check the mobile number or UPI ID when sending money so that it doesn't go to the wrong person.

Watch out for your transaction history now and then in order to spot anything that might look odd.

Scams could be found in random links or messages asking for UPI details. Avoid responding to those

Avoid using public Wi-Fi for UPI payments, as it can be unsafe
