UAN Activation and Registration: A Step-by-Step Guide

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has developed the Universal Account Number (‘UAN’), which is an affiliation account number meant to consolidate an employee's various Provident Fund (‘PF’) accounts into a single unified system for catering to service efficiency. With UAN, employees manage their PF accounts from an all-inclusive platform, where they can check balances, transfer accounts, contribute to the PF and even file claims.

Who Allots UAN and When?

Normally, the employer provides the UAN while onboarding the employee. However, in some instances, mainly in the unorganised sector, employees may have to get it on their own from the EPFO portal.

How to Know Your UAN (If You Don’t Know It Already)

Steps to check or get your UAN from the EPFO portal:

Visit the official EPFO website.

Select Know Your UAN available at the login box's bottom right.

Fill in the details:

Member ID/Aadhaar/PAN.

Name as mentioned in Aadhaar.

DOB.

The mobile number that is linked to Aadhaar.

Captcha.

Press Request OTP.

Now, please input the OTP received on your mobile.

Your UAN will be sent to you via SMS or will be displayed on your screen.

Step-by-Step Guide to UAN Activation and Registration

Step 1: Visit EPFO Member Portal

Go to Portal

Step 2: Click on “Activate UAN”

You’ll find this link under the login form, labelled clearly.

Step 3: Fill in the Required Details

You need to provide the following details:

UAN.

Name (as in Aadhaar/PF records).

Date of Birth.

Mobile number.

Email ID (optional).

Captcha Verification Code.

Step 4: Request OTP

After selecting “Get Authorisation Pin”, you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.

Step 5: Enter OTP and Submit

Once you enter the OTP and submit, your UAN will be activated.

Step 6: Create a Password

You will now be prompted to create a password for your convenience in future logins. Ensure that your password contains a great combination of letters, symbols, and numbers.

After finishing, a confirmation message will show on your screen as well as be sent to you via SMS.

How to Log in After Activation

Follow these steps to access your PF account now that your UAN is active:

Open the EPFO Member Portal.

Enter:

Your UAN

Your Password (the one you just created)

Enter Captcha

Hit Sign In.

From your dashboard, you can now:

Download your PF Passbook.

File claims like withdrawals or advances, etc.

Update KYC details such as Aadhaar, PAN, and Bank Information.

View your Service History.

Monitor Your Claim Status.

Documents Required for UAN Activation and KYC Update

While documentation is not required during account activation, ensure that the following documents are associated with your UAN to take advantage of all services:

Aadhaar Card (mandatory, must have undergone verification).

PAN Card

Bank Account (with IFSC code)

Aadhaar-linked mobile number

What If I Forget My UAN Password?

No need to stress—changing your UAN password is just a few easy clicks away.

How to Change Your UAN Password:

Open the EPFO Member Login Portal.

Click on Forgot Password.

Type in your UAN and the given captcha.

Click Submit.

An OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with your account.

Verify your ZIP Code and provide a new password.
